Sensory-Friendly Dance at Indianola Dance Academy

At Indianola Dance Academy, we truly believe that dance should be for every child. While all of our classes are open and welcoming, we know that for some students, a typical dance class can feel a little overwhelming. That’s why we’ve created something special—our Sensory-Friendly Dance Classes on Saturday mornings with Miss Cortney.

What makes these classes different?

These classes are designed with flexibility and comfort in mind. Students are welcome to bring a safe support person with them, so they know they’re not alone. If a dancer needs to step out and take a break, that’s perfectly okay—they can come back when they’re ready.

Classes are just 30 minutes long, keeping the time manageable and fun without being too much. And when it comes to performances, like our recital? Those are completely optional—no pressure, just opportunity if and when the student feels ready.

A space designed for comfort

We’ve taken extra steps to make sure the environment feels calm and welcoming:

  • Lower lighting to avoid overstimulation
  • Quiet corners/safe spaces if a student needs a break
  • Fun tools like scarves, ribbons, and bean bags to explore movement in creative ways
  • Students are welcome to bring or use noise-cancelling headphones if that helps them feel more comfortable

Who are these classes for?

They’re perfect for kids who may:

  • Feel a little anxious in group settings
  • Get overstimulated with lots of noise or activity
  • Need a more relaxed class environment
  • Thrive with extra support and encouragement

What happens in class?

With Miss Cortney leading the way, students get to explore movement, music, and imagination in a calm, supportive setting. We’ll do short activities that keep things engaging, with plenty of space for students to move at their own pace. Our goal isn’t just to teach dance steps—it’s to help kids build confidence, make connections, and discover the joy of moving their bodies.

“Creating a sensory-friendly dance class is my way of advocating for inclusion. As a mother of a child with sensory issues, I wanted to provide a space where every child feels safe, understood, and empowered to learn in their own way. At IDA, we believe no child should ever have to ‘fit in to succeed’—instead, the environment should adapt to meet their needs. This work is personal. It’s driven by love, empathy, and a deep desire to make the world a little easier for kids like mine. There is so much beauty in neurodiversity.”
